The ideal situation for any shipping logistics company is for freight to run smoothly. However, getting it out of the warehouse, onto the transport, and delivered to its destination can come with unexpected complications. Rejected freight is cargo that the receiver cannot accept, leaving it rejected and sent back from the delivery location.
Freight may not be damaged but errors in paperwork can also get your freight sent back. The bill of landing (BOL) carries all shipping information and includes information such as product and package descriptions, shipper and receiver addresses and info, date of pickup, freight class, and special instructions. If information is missing or incorrect on the BOL, your freight will be rejected and returned to sender.
Some companies require specific pallet configurations for freight to be accepted. These configurations can include pallet dimensions, shrink wrapping, skid type, and more. If the configuration does not meet the requirements of the receiver, your freight may be rejected.
Freight can shift or fall due to mishandling, broken slats, or improper wrapping, among other conditions. This can not only damage the cargo but also injure warehouse and distribution workers. If shifted or fallen, freight may be rejected until fixed.
Damaged cases can also result in rejected freight. Cases can be damaged through rough handling in the warehouse or during transportation resulting in dented, crushed, or bent cases. Even if the freight itself is undamaged, a damaged case can result in your freight being rejected until freight is moved to a new case or the damaged case is amended.
Sometimes the reason for freight being rejected starts during the pick and pack process. Warehouses can be busy places and accidentally shipping the wrong product is a possibility. If the wrong product makes it to the destination, the receiver will reject the freight and the picking, prepping, and shipping process will need to start anew.
